Is it permissible for the intern to see the ‘awrah of patients, whether the patient is from the same or opposite gender, for training purposes? Is it consisted a matter of necessity and the intern in such case is viewed as a practicing doctors? اطلاع الطبيب المتدرب على عورة المريض

All praise is due to Allah alone, and may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions. To answer your question, we say while seeking the success from Allah: Without doubt, this case cannot be considered a matter of necessity for the patient because the resident doctor is the one responsible for their treatment. As for interns, it is possible to train them without exposing others ‘awrah to them, especially that it is noted in the field of medicine that there is some laxity in seeing the ‘awrah of patients and respecting their privacy.  Needless to add, the current technology used in hospitals does not make direct examination necessary for trainees and so seeing the ‘awrah of patents by interns just to see the ‘awrah is not allowed. However, this prohibition does not apply to the case where seeing the ‘awrah is intended so interns can diagnose the patient under the supervision of someone who has more knowledge, though this should happen in a strict way and be limited to what is needed to fulfill the intended purpose.
