Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. A hadith whose authenticity I am not sure of says, “Indeed Allah does not accept the prayer of a man who lets his garment hang below his ankles.” What is the authenticity of this hadith? حديث لا يقبل صلاة رجل مسبل

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions. Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As to what follows: In response to your question, we say:   This hadith was transmitted by Abu Dawud (638) and others from the way of Abu Ja’far, from ‘Ata ibn Yasar, from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him). An-Nawawi said, “The chain of narrators in the hadith is authentic according to the conditions of Muslim”. However, al-Muthiri was of the view that the hadith is weak. He said, “Abu Ja’far is in the chain of narrators of the hadith, and he is an unknown man from Madinah”.
