Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Is it correct that ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) drank the blood of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah said, “The affliction of the people will be from you.” هل هذه الرواية صحيحة؟

الجواب

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions. Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As to what follows: In response to your question, we say: This story was narrated by al-Bazzar, at-Tabarani, al-Hakim, and al-Baihaqi from the hadiths of ‘Amir from ‘Abdullahi ibn az-Zubair, from his father, that he said, “The Prophet (peace be upon him) was cupped, and he gave me the blood and said, “Go and throw it away.” I went away and drank the blood. I came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and he said, “What did you do?” I said, “I put it away”. He said, “Did you  not drink it?” I said, “I drank it”. [al-Bazzar (2210). In his narration At-Tabarani added the following, “Who told you to drink the blood? People will trouble you and you will trouble people”. The author of at-Talkhis al-Habir (1/30)said, “This hadith was transmitted by at-Tabarani in al-Kabir, al-Baihaqiin Khasais min as-Sunan. Al-Hunaid ibn al-Qasim is in the chain of narrators of this hadith; there is no problem with him but he is not known for being knowledgeable”. The report that ibn Zubair drank the blood of the Prophet (peace be upon him) was transmitted by a number of people. Some scholars including al-Ghazali (may Allah have mercy on him) refuted this, but there is no transmitted text to support their view. And Allah knows best.
