Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. is it permissible to reject authentic and mutawaatir hadeeths (a hadeeth which is reported by such a large number of people that they cannot be expected to agree upon a lie, all of them together) as is done by many people in contemporary times based on the fact that 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) rejected the hadeeth of Fatimah bint Qays wherein she said that a woman who is irrevocably divorced does not deserve to be provided with accommodation and expenditure, and he said, "We cannot leave acting upon a verse in Allah's book based on the statement of a woman whom we do not know if she remembers or has forgotten the narration? These people claim that before accepting hadeeths, they should be compared with the Qur'an, and their meanings should be studied, and it should be determined if they are in line with reality. This may lead to a loss of much of the Sunnah. Some of these people accept weak and fabricated hadeeths, and reject authentic hadeeths based on their contrived rule. Can you please explain? الاحتجاج بقول عمر لرد الأحاديث الصحيحة

الجواب

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.

Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

As to what follows:

All praise is due to Allah. May Allah's peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.
To proceed:
A reply to these types of doubts which seek to tone down and to escape from the rulings of the Sharee'ah is to explain the great status of the Sahaba (may Allah be pleased with them) and the pious predecessors of the ummah, their respect and reverence for the hadeeth of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). This was the methodology of the Sahaba. Instances where these was not the case are personal incidents which had their own conditions, circumstances, and justifications. This can only be said after verifying if these incidents occurred. It is known that in some instances some of the Sahaba mistakenly thought that there was contradiction in the texts of the Qur'an or Sunnah. Some of the Sahaba asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) about what they did not understand in that regard and he answered them well and removed confusion. It is known that when two texts contradict each other in a manner which is makes it impossible for them to be reconciled, and there is no room for considering one of the texts to be abrogated, the situation is dealt with by choosing the preponderant text. This is what 'Umar did in the narration that was transmitted from him. However, Imam Ahmad considered the narration which mentioned that 'Umar said, "We do not permit a woman's statement in our religion" to be weak. In any case the actions of the people of weak faith cannot be compared to the actions of those who had deep-rooted faith, and were inspired to follow the true path. Allah the Exalted said, "  As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord " [Al-'Imran: 7]. O Allah guide us to the straight path, and save us from the evil of ourselves.
