What is the ruling on bleeding that accompanies the insertion of an IUD (intra-uterine device)? ما حكم الدم الذي يصاحب تركيب اللولب

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.

As to what follows:

In response to your question, we say, and with Allah Almighty lies all success:

The insertion of an IUD mostly takes place during a woman’s menstruation, or near the end of her monthly period. So if this was the time in which a woman had an IUD inserted, and the bleeding continued, then it takes the ruling of menstruation as long as it does not exceed fifteen days. This is so because this bleeding is based on the original ruling of menstruation, and the original ruling remains so long as the original state remains, until the extent of the limited time is reached, which is fifteen days. However, if the bleeding stops before (fifteen days), then she takes a bath and starts praying.

But if the IUD was inserted during the state of purity (non-menstrual period), and then bleeding started, then it is not menstrual blood, rather it is spoiled blood (from a blood vessel), because the reason for the bleeding is known, which is the process of inserting an IUD. So based on this, this bleeding does not prevent one from praying, and it is spoiled blood (from a corrupted vein), unless it was menstrual blood, meaning: the insertion of the IUD causes the flow of menstruation, in which case it is considered menstrual blood.

As for the case of other discharges, meaning: it is not flowing liquid blood, rather a small discharge; then this takes the ruling of spoiled (corrupted vessel) blood, in which case it is recommended to make wudhu before every prayer. But if she did not repeat her wudhu (remained on her previous wudhu), then her prayer is still valid. Meaning: if she used one wudhu for more than one prayer, and her wudhu was not nullified by anything coming out, other than this discharge, then her prayer is still valid.

And Allah knows best.
