If I made wudhu’ and put on transparent socks, then took them off, is the wudhu’ nullified? إذا توضأت ولبست شرابا شفافا ثم فسخته هل ينتقض الوضوء؟

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.

As to what follows:

In response to your question, we say, and with Allah Almighty lies all success:

The scholars have many opinions on this, the most correct of which is that the wudhu’ is not nullified by removing socks while in the state of purity.  Rather, the state of purity is ongoing, and one may continue to pray so long as the wudhu’ is not nullified [by that which nullifies it], just as if one did not remove their socks. The reason for that is that the principle ruling is that the state of purity remains intact, and there is no evidence of it being nullified, for if removing socks nullified the wudhu’, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would have made it clear.

So there is no need to repeat wudhu’ or rewash the feet. This is the opinion of a group of scholars, among them Hasan al-Basri and Qatada. It is also the preferred opinion of Ibn al-Mundhir and our shaykh, Muhammad `Uthaymin (may Allah have mercy on him).

And Allah knows best.

Your brother,

Dr. Khalid al-Muslih
