The ruling on facing the Qiblah (direction of prayer) while relieving oneself (in the toilet) حكم استقبال القبلة أثناء قضاء الحاجة

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

This is a matter in which there is a difference of opinion, and this is what Shaykh Ibn `Uthaymin (may Allah have mercy on him) reached in conclusion to what is correct [i.e. that it is a matter of strong dispute, not giving preference to any particular opinion].

As for the opinion that there is no difference between a building (built washroom) and other than it [i.e. relieving oneself in open air], and that the prohibition is one of dislike [and not absolute prohibition]; then this is the opinion of a group of scholars. But what prevents one from doing it [i.e. facing the Qiblah while relieving oneself], is that the prohibition was initially general, then it was permitted in a specific case. So one should act accordingly, gathering between all the texts [of the Qur’an and Sunnah].

And Allah knows best.

Your brother,

Dr. Khalid al-Muslih
