What is the ruling on wearing a hat (eg. baseball cap), not for imitating the disbelievers, but for fulfilling one’s desire to wear it and as a beauty accessory? حكم لبس القبعة (البرنيطة)

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.   As to what follows:   In response to your question, we say, and with Allah Almighty lies all success:   If this hat is only worn by the disbelievers, then it is not permissible to wear it, because it would be a form of resembling them. This has been prohibited in the texts of the Qur’an and Sunnah, and according to scholarly opinion without disagreement. There is no difference in whether it is your intention to resemble them or not, because the resemblance that is prohibited is the uniformity in appearance, even if unintended.     As for if the hat is worn by both Muslims and non-Muslims, then if it is from the apparel of  the transgressors and foolish ones, then you shouldn’t wear it either, because a Muslim is prohibited from resembling anyone who is of a lowly stature,  and also for the general statement of the Prophet (peace be upon him) as narrated by Bukhari and Muslim, “It does not befit us to leave bad examples,” and other texts that point to the prohibition of resembling those of a lowly stature in character. But if it was something that is worn in general by Muslims, and not specifically by the transgressors and foolish ones, then in this case there is nothing wrong with wearing it.
