What is the ruling on stoning before the time of midday?

الرمي قبل الزوال

Answer

All praise is due to Allah alone, and may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions. To answer your question, we say while seeking the success from Allah: First, the question is about throwing stones (Arabic: rami al-jimaar) and this ritual is not called stoning (Arabic: rajm) as we often receive questions referring to it as such. The religious term for this ritual that scholars use in their books is called throwing stones because stoning is a term used to describe the punishment of the married adulterer. Every time someone would ask my shaykh, may Allah have mercy on him, and say ‘I stoned…’ He would reply, ‘Did you stone an adulterer?’ to explain the difference between the two terms.   Second, there is nothing required to do if a person throws the stones before midday.
