What should a woman do if she menstruates before Tawaf al-Ifadah?

حاضت قبل طواف الإفاضة فماذا تفعل

Answer

All praise is due to Allah alone, and may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions. To answer your question, we say while seeking all the success from Allah: If the woman menstruates before performing Tawaf al-Ifadah, she must not perform it until after she becomes pure. This is because the Prophet (may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon him) said to Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) when she began to menstruate before entering Makkah: “Do everything that the pilgrim does but do not circumambulate the House until you become pure (i.e. your menses ends).” Reported by al-Bukhari (305) and Muslim (1211) In another Hadith reported by Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) wherein she reported that the Messenger of Allah was informed that Safiyyah bint Huyayy entered the period of menses, he said to her: “Well, you will detain us. Did you circumambulate the House on the day of slaughtering?” She answered, “Yes, I have.” Thereupon Allah's Messenger said, “[If it is so,] then proceed forth.” Reported by al-Bukhari (1762) and Muslim (1211) This hadith shows that if she did not perform Tawaf al-Ifadah before entering her period of menses, she would have to avoid circumambulating until after her menstrual bleeding stops. This is a matter of agreement between scholars and so entering the period of menses does not affect the correctness of her Hajj. That being said, if she could not stay in Makkah until she is pure and it is easy for her to return to Makkah to do Tawaf al-Ifadah, then she can go back to her town or house [outside Makkah], and until she is pure and returns to perform her circumambulation, her husband must refrain from intimacy with her. However, if it is impossible or very difficult for her to return to Makkah as in the case of those who live outside Saudi Arabia, she can be excused and as an exception she can wrap her private area with a cloth and circumambulate due to the necessity, as stated by some scholars. And Allah knows best. Your brother,

Khalid al-Mosleh
