What is the ruling on people who stay in I’tikaaf in Makkah and insist on performing Umrah many times?

تكرار العمرة في السفر الواحد

Answer

All praise is due to Allah alone, and may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions. To answer your question, we say while seeking all the success from Allah: There is no doubt that what some people do these days in regards to performing the Umrah many times on the same day or on a daily basis or in short intervals during the year is baseless. This is because the least period of time that the salaf waited until they would perform the second Umrah was 10 days; therefore performing Umrah more than once within a lower timeframe than 10 days is discouraged. This ruling is also applicable to those who return to their country after performing one Umrah and then after less than 10 days they return to do Umrah again. As for performing Umrah many times in one trip then this was prevented by a group of the salaf including Said ibn Jubair and Tawoos who was one of the most esteemed students of Ibn Abbas. Tawoos said, “I do not know whether those who assume ihram for Umrah from al-Tan’eem will be rewarded or punished!” It should be noted that those who allowed it from the Salaf did not allow it in the way that people are doing it today i.e. performing it more than one time in the same day or every two days etc. Al-Shafie documented in his Musnad that some of the children of Anas ibn Malik said, “We were with Anas ibn Malik in Makkah [performing Umrah] and when his hair started to reappear [after it was shaved] he would go out and then perform Umrah again.” Normally hair re-grows enough to be noticed within 10 days as Imam Ahmad said. In summary, I advise my fellow Muslims to work hard in good deeds and to ensure their actions conform to the guidance of the Sunnah of the Prophet for no guidance is more perfect than his.   Your brother, Khaled al-Mosleh   06/09/1424
