What is the ruling on pacing in between al-Safa and al-Marwa with no time interval between the rounds? حكم الموالاة في السعي

Answer

All praise is due to Allah alone, and may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions. To answer your question, we say while seeking all the success from Allah: The scholars have two different opinions about the ruling on pacing in between al-Safa and al-Marwa without time intervals: The first view states that it is not obligatory; rather it is recommended according to Hanafi, Shafie scholars as well as one of the transmitted views of Imam Ahmad. The reasoning behind this view is that there is no evidence to suggest it is obligatory. The second view states that it is obligatory and this is the official view of the Maliki and Hanbali Madhabs. The evidence of this view is based on analogy i.e. they believe it is similar to the ruling on circumambulation of the Ka’bah. However, it appears to me that it is obligatory to pace the rounds in between al-Safa and al-Marwa without time intervals between each round unless there is a valid excuse. This is because having long time intervals between each round disconnects the parts of the worship and so it corrupts the act of worship whose integral parts are connected. And Allah knows best.
