Is it permissible to unnecessarily expose the awrah when alone? كشف العورة في الخلوة

Answer

All praise is due to Allah alone, and may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions. To answer your question, we say while seeking the success from Allah: The majority of scholars from Hanafi, Shafe’i and Hanbali Madhabs are in agreement that covering the awrah when alone is obligatory unless there is a need to uncover it such as in the case of showers, relieving oneself, and intercourse, etc. However, Maliki scholars stated that covering the awrah when alone is recommended and uncovering in this case is disliked.  The view of the majority is more correct because al-Tirmidhi (2794), Abu Dawd (4017) and others narrated from Bahz ibn Hakeem from his father that his grandfather said: The Messenger of Allah (may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon him) said: “Cover your ‘awrah except from your wife and those whom your right hand possesses (i.e., concubines).” I [grandfather of bahz] said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what if one of us is alone?’ He said, “Allah is more deserving that you should feel shy before Him than people.”Al-Tirmidhi commented on this Hadith by saying that it is a Hasan Hadith, and it was also reported by al-Bukhari. Al-Hafidh Ibn Hajar quoted the views of scholars regarding Bahz and said in his book “ Taghliq al-Ta’liq “ (2/160): “It has an authentic chain of narrators up to Bahz whose credibility is differed on i.e. Ali ibn al-Madaini and Yahya ibn Ma’in credited him , and said once: it is an authentic chain if the ones from whom Bahz narrated are trustworthy.” That being said, it becomes clear that the hadith is authentic and can be used as evidence. The majority also relied on another hadith narrated by al-Timidhi (2800) from 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) who said: The Messenger of Allah (may the Salah and Salam of Allah) said: "Beware of being naked, for you have with you those who never leave you except when you defecate, and when a man goes in unto his wife, so feel shy of them and respect them." al-Tirmidhi declared this hadith weak but the hadith of Bahz is sufficient to use to establish the ruling. And Allah knows best. Your brother, Khalid al-Mosleh,   28/3/1425 H.
