Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. During the time of breaking fast I was in a densely populated area. The Al-Asr watch was indicating that the Maghrib athan for the area that I was in would be called at 17:02. By 17:06 I had not heard the athan, so I broke my fast. A minute or less after I broke fast the muezzin called out the athan. Am I sinful by actions? Should I make up for that day?

الإفطار بغلبة الظن

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions. Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As to what follows: In response to your question, we say:     If you broke your fast based on the belief that the time of Maghrib had started, then you are not required to make up for the missed fast, especially that you relied on what the muezzins rely on when making athan. Thus your fasting is valid. Dr. Khalid al-Mosleh   08/10/1424 H
