Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. What is the ruling of putting Vicks in the nose when I am fasting? حكم استعمال الفكس للصائم

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions. Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As to what follows: In response to your question, we say:   Putting Vicks or other substances with scents like perfumes, for example, in the nose does not nullify fasting according to the most correct opinion from the two opinion of the scholars, because there is no text or consensus of opinion that the things nullify fasting. The original rule is that fasting is not broke. In his book Haqeeqat as-Siyam, Shaykh al-Islam ibn Taymiyyah, in his discussion of the nullification of fasting by using kohl said, “If using kohl nullified fasting the Prophet (peace be upon him) would have stated that like he stated that other things besides it nullify fasting. Thus, because the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not state that, it is known that kohl is like perfume, incense and fat. Incense goes up to the nose, enters into the brain and forms objects. Fat is taken up by the body and goes inside it and strengthens a person. Likewise, a person is strengthened by perfume. Due to the fact that the fasting person was not prohibited from these things, this indicates that a fasting person is permitted to perfume himself, use incense, apply fat and kohl”. I also say, “Similarly if a fasting person  puts Vicks and similar substances on his nose his fast is not nullified”. The Hanafite scholars have explicitly stated that if a fasting person detects the taste of medicine on his throat without having consumed it, then that does not affect his fasting.  The author of Radd al-Muhtar said, “ His statement (like the taste of medicine) that is if he crushes medicine and detects its taste in his throat.”  Then he said, “The taste of medication and scent of perfume do not break the fast if a person detects them in his throat.” This is the opinion of the Shafi’tes and the Hambalites.
