Answer
Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions. Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As to what follows: In response to your question, we say: There is no Zakah due from them in this wealth because they did not possess it during the time of its absence, and they did not know about it. This wealth is not referred to in the verse “Take Sadaqah (alms) from their wealth in order to purify them and sanctify them with it” [at-Tawbah 9: 103] because they did not know about, therefore, it takes the ruling of lost wealth, which is considered to be not wholly owned by a person.
