Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. A woman has a lot of gold in the form of bracelets and necklaces, and its Zakat is much. The woman does not have a source of income and her husband cannot always pay Zakat for this gold. The woman wears a small quantity from this gold. Is there problem if she keeps the gold in anticipation of a rainy day, and does not give Zakat on it, considering that her husband’s financial situation may require use of the gold in future?

زكاة الحلي

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.   Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As to what follows: In response to your question, we say: What is apparent from the question is that this gold is not for adornment, rather it is being kept in anticipation of future needs and expenditures. It is compulsory to give Zakat for this type of gold because it is covered by the general proofs from the Qur’an and Sunnah which indicate that Zakah should be paid for jewelry. If the woman does not have cash then she can give the required quantity for Zakat from some of the gold. She may also calculate the required Zakat and sell gold which will give her the equivalent in cash which she can give to the Zakat recipients.   Dr. Khalid al-Muslih
