Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. I have a sister who owns gold liras which are equivalent to eighty-five grams. Eight years have passed and the Zakat which is compulsory on them has not been paid. These liras have not been worn at all. What is the Islamic ruling concerning that?

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions. Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As to what follows: In response to your question, we say: It is compulsory to pay the Zakat of these liras because they are not jewelry. There is no difference of opinion among the scholars concerning the compulsoriness of Zakat on gold, rather, the scholars differed on jewelry, as to whether Zakat is compulsory on it or not.
