Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Since my childhood I have been buying gold for ownership and wearing , and I never thought of selling it in times of need. I used to wear this gold and after my marriage the amount of gold that I had increased. I travelled with my husband and left the gold with my mother, and it has been with her for five years. I cannot use the gold now because I am away from my mother. Is Zakat due on this gold? The big problem is that I do not know the quantity of this gold, and I cannot estimate it. What is the value of the Zakat of gold? Is Zakat due on my gold for the past five years? What should I do if I cannot estimate the gold. My mother is old and cannot help in this regard. Can I give out any amount with the intention that it is Zakat, and how much should this amount be? زكاة الذهب المعد للاستعمال الشخصي

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions. Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As to what follows: In response to your question, we say: Answer 1: The Zakat of gold is 2.5%. Answer 2:  The safest thing is that you should pay Zakat for the past years if the Zakat was for adornment. If the Zakat was for bought for accumulation, then Zakat is due on it according to most scholars.   Answer 3: The way out is that you should record the price of a gram of gold for each of the past years, and when you return to your mother’s home you should weigh the gold, and then pay its Zakat for all the past years.  You can also request your mother to weigh the gold, and then you can pay Zakat based on international price of gold.  And Allah is the granter of success.
