Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Is there a prayer by the name Swalatul Hajah (prayer of need)? What is its proof? And how is it performed in terms of its rak’at?

صلاة الحاجة

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.
Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
As to what follows:
Swalatul Hajah is mentioned in a hadith narrated by Tirmidhi (476) on the authority of Abdullah Ibn Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him ) that:
“Allah's Messenger (peace be on him) said: "Whoever has a need from Allah, or from one of the sons of Adam, then let him perform Wudhu, performing it well, then pray two Rak`ah, then praise Allah and say Swalat upon the Prophet (peace be on him). Then let him say: (La ilaha illallah Al-Halimul-Karim. Subhan Allah Rabbil-`Arshil-`Azim. Al-Hamdulillahi Rabbil-`Alamin. As'aluka mujibati rahmatika wa `aza'im maghfiratika, wal-ghanimata min kulli birrin, was-salamata min kulli ithmin, la tada` li dhanban illa ghafartahu, wa la hamman illa farrajtahu, wa la Hajatan hiya laka ridan Illa Qadaitaha, ya arham ar-rahimin) 'None has the right to be worshiped but Allah. Al-Halim (The Forbearing) Al-Karim (The Generous). Glorious is Allah, Lord of the Magnificent Throne. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. I ask You for that which warrants Your mercy, and that which will determine Your forgiveness, and the spoils (fruits) of every righteous deed, and safety from every sin; do not leave a sin for me without forgiving it, nor a worry without relieving it. Or a need that pleases you without granting it. O Most-Merciful of those who have mercy.”
Tirmidhi graded it weak whereupon he said: “this is a strange hadith and there are some reservations on its chain of narrators. Al-Nawawi mentioned the same hadith while transmitting what Tirmidhi said regarding its weakness though he did not give a comment on it.
Majority of scholars are of the view that this swalah is desirable though they differ on the number of its rak’ats. The majority said it has 2 rak’ats whereas Hanifites said it has 4 rak’ats.
What is apparent is that there is no harm in performing this swalah. Many hadith are mentioned on the permissibility of Swaltul Hajah.
Some of them are:
A hadith narrated by Ahmad which was reported by Abu Dar Da’ that “whoever makes his wudhu perfect then performs 2rak’ats, Allah will give him what he asks immediately or in future.”
“A narration by Ahmad, Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah on the authority of Uthman Ibn Hanif regarding a story of a blind man who was told to make wudhu properly, pray 2 rak’ats and make dua.”
Abu Bakr Ibn Abu Khaythamh added in his history that: whoever has a need should do that.
These are hadiths which have reservations in their chain of narrators but if they when put together they suffice to prove the permissibility of swalatul Hajah.
And Allah knows best.

Your brother,
Dr. Khalid al-Muslih
