Fatwas / Prayer / Completion of swalah on a journey

I am traveling with my father to London for medication and we do not know when we will return. The question is: I complete my swalah according to the opinion of the majority of scholars but when my father’s appointment comes or when he enters into the hospital I join prayers. If I go for a long distance trip in the rural area I join and shorten my prayers. What is the ruling on my joining and shortening of prayers bearing in mind that I follow the opinion of the majority of scholars which is completion? May you please advise me with the correct and preponderate view regarding this issue?

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.
Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
As to what follows:
With regards to answering your question we say, success is by Allah Almighty.
Regarding this issue, the difference of opinion is well known whereby many books were authored. The majority of scholars specifies the period of travel with specific number days; four, ten or nineteen days depending on the difference among them.

The second opinion is that there is no specific limit for the period of travel and this is what we view as the correct opinion. It is also the opinion held by our Shaykh Ibn Uthaymin.
This is one of the issues that has a wide difference of opinion. Whoever views completion as right should complete and whoever views shortening as right should shorten.
If a person who is completing prays behind an Imam who is shortening he should complete the remaining rak’ats after the Imam says taslim and if a person who is shortening prays behind an Imam who is completing he should complete.
And Allah knows best.

Your brother,
Dr. Khalid al-Muslih
