Fatwas / Prayer / Relaxing (letting down) of the two hands during swalah

I discussed issues related to swalah with one of my friends and he told me that relaxing (letting down) the hands in swalah is permissible and there is no explicit text forbidding the relaxing of hands and instructing folding of hands during swalah. Is it correct what he mentioned?

إسدال اليدين في الصلاة

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.

Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

As to what follows:

With regards to answering your question we say, success is by Allah Almighty.

There is difference of opinion regarding the issue but what is correct is to put the right hand over the left hand during swalah. This is supported by what is narrated by Bukhari (740) on the authority of Malik from Abu Hazim from Sahl Ibn Sa’d who said that:

“People used to be ordered to place their right hands on their left forearms in the prayer."Abu Hazim added, "I know for sure that Sahl traces that back to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.”

Muslim (401) also narrates that:

Wai’l Ibn Hujr (may Allah be pleased with him) saw the Messenger of Allah () raising his hands at the time of beginning the prayer and reciting takbir, and according to Hammam (the narrator), the hands were lifted opposite to ears. He (the Holy Prophet) then wrapped his hands in his cloth and placed his right hand over his left hand.”
