Respected Shaykh, Assalamu Alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu, What is the ruling of attending parties where the people are dressed indecently? Is this similar to incidents where music is played?

حضور حفلات فيها منكرات

Answer

All praise is due to Allah. May Allah's peace and blessings be upon our prophet Muhammad, his family and all his companions.

The scholars agreed that in terms of principle if a person is invited to an occasion which consists of prohibited things, then he should not attend. If not attending will lead to harm in the form of the cutting of ties of kinship and so on, then a male or female believer should deal with the issue in a gentle manner, and turn this invitation into a means of calling to Allah the Exalted.  He should contact the person who extended the invitation, and explain to him that he cannot attend the occasion because of the prohibited things involved. Then, if possible he should request him to do away with the prohibited things.

Moreover, if his presence will cause a reduction in the prohibited things, then my view is that he should attend the occasion because the Sharee'ah commanded us to achieve what is beneficial and to strive for an increase of that, and to limit harm and prevent it. Therefore, if we cannot completely stop the prohibited things, the least we can do is to limit them. And Allah knows best.
