Fatwas / Inheritance and donations / Gift for a school

It is well known that it is not permissible to present a teacher with a gift as it is feared that it can be a form of bribe. However in the event that this teacher has finished his tenure then it is permissible to present him with a gift because the fear or impediment will no longer be there. This is what is famous regarding this issue, but are there other situations whereby a teacher can accept the gift?

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.

To proceed:

The general principle is that every gift that a human being takes in his capacity as an employee falls under what the Messenger of Allah (peace be on him) prohibited with respect to gifts that employees can take. From this prohibition, the scholars have put an exemption if the gift is presented for reasons which are not work related like affinity, friendship, companionship and the like.

Your brother,

Dr. Khalid al-Mosleh
