We slaughtered half a camel for a boy and a girl as aqeeqah. Is this sufficient?

ذبحنا نصف بدنة عن ولد وبنت كعقيقة فهل تجزئ؟

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.

To proceed:

In response to your question, I say:

The  majority of scholars are of the opinion that what is sufficient for Eid sacrifice suffices for aqeeqah. Therefore it will suffice if one sacrifices a camel, cow or sheep. People who support this view differed among themselves and some said: "It is sufficient to share in sacrifice of a camel or cow whereby one seventh of a cow is equivalent to one sheep." So one seventh of a camel suffices for the girl and another seventh suffices for the boy. This view was held by the Shafites and Hanafites. The Malikites and Hambalites went on to say that a full camel is sufficient in place of one sheep. A group of Malikite, Hanbalite and Dhahiriyite scholars held the view that anything other than sheep will not be sufficient for aqeeqah because the Messenger (peace be on him) said: “For a boy two sheep (of equal age), and for a girl, one sheep.” This was transmitted by Ahmad and Tirmidhi on the authority of Umm Karz al-Ka’biyyah. Likewise a narration by Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: “Allah's Messenger (peace be on him) commanded them to slaughter two sheep equal (in age) for a boy and one for a girl at their birth.” There is no doubt that this is the safest way and most nearer to the Sunnah and the actions of the companions.
And Allah knows best.
