Fatwas / Sales Fatawa / I bought a house with interest money how can I get rid of it?

I bought an apartment using a usurious loan and later regretted. I now want to get rid of this, so I put the house on sale with the intention of paying back the money I borrowed from the bank then rent another house untill I can manage to buy a house without having to breach any Islamic rules. I found out that I am going to lose a significant amount of money from this sale. My question is: What is the appropriate thing to do from a shari’a perspective? Keeping the house because selling it will cause me financial loss or selling it regardless of the loss so that Allah forgives me? May you please give me an urgent response and may Allah reward you.

اشتريت بيتاً بالربا فكيف أتخلص منه؟

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.

To proceed:

I ask Allah to accept your repentance from this usurious transaction. However with regards to getting rid of this; what is apparent is that banks do not accept that you return the principal money not inclusive of any interest. They also do not accept speeding up payment in exchange of wavering interest charges that correspond with fixed term of payment. That being said, I do not think that selling the house will have any effect on cancellation of interest; therefore selling the house is not necessary due to the loss involved. Moreover it will not help you get rid of the interest.
