Question

She passed forty days of nifas (post-partum period), but has not seen the sign of purity (white discharge) yet, but the blood now does not resemble post-partum blood, rather it is a mixture of brownish discharges. So is it considered part of nifas for its continuation and absence of the sign of purity (white discharge), or is it considered istihadhah (non-menstrual blood flow due to an ill-functioning blood vessel) by the ruling of having passed forty days? We would like the correct view on this with supporting evidence, May Allah bless you and your knowledge, and cause benefit through you. جاوزت الأربعين في النفاس، ولم تر الطهر بعد، ماذا تفعل؟

In response to your question, we say, and with Allah Almighty lies all success:

If this brownish discharge is a continuation of the nifas (post-partum bleeding), then in my view she should wait until the flow stops, even if it passes forty days. But if it is not connected to the nifas (i.e. it started after the nifas stopped), then most likely she has become pure since the stop in blood flow.
