Fatwas / Purification / Is yellow and brown discharge part of menstruation?

Question

A woman saw yellow (discharge) mixed with reddish (discharge) before praying Maghrib, and she did not see any blood until Dhuhr the next day. This sometimes happens to her. So if she sees brownish or yellowish (discharge) around the time she is expecting her period, she drinks cumin, honey, or something that brings on the period. Sometimes the period starts right away and at other times it does not start until after half a day, bearing in mind that she does not stop praying during that time - half a day (between seeing muddy discharge and actual blood) - as she does not know if it is part of her period or not. Which prayer does she have to make up after becoming clean [from her period]? Maghrib or Dhuhr, or both of them to be on the safe side? And is what she does (praying during that time - half a day - after seeing muddy discharge and before actual bleeding) correct? الصفرة والكدرة هل هي من الحيض؟

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.

 As to what follows:

In response to your question, we say, and with Allah Almighty lies all success:

Yellowish and brownish (discharge) is not part of menstruation. Thus, it does not prevent one from fasting or praying. So continue praying until you see blood. When you see blood, stop praying.

Furthermore, you do not have to make up for the prayer if your period started after the starting time of the prayer, unless you delayed it [had ample time to pray] until there was only enough time to pray. In that case, you have to make it up after becoming clean.
