Fatwas / Purification / Muddy and yellowish discharge in menstruation and post-partum period
Question
Dear respected Shaykh, Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Is muddy and yellowish discharge during menstruation and post-partum period considered part of it or not? الكدرة والصفرة في الحيض والنفاس
Answer
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Wa alaykum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
In response to your question, we say, and with Allah Almighty lies all success:
The scholars have differing opinions on the topic of muddy and yellowish discharge. The closest opinion to what is correct, is that muddy and yellowish discharge is nothing [i.e. not to be given any importance]. So if the menstruation and post-partum period has ended, then the ruling regarding it has ended, and muddy and yellowish discharge thereafter does not affect it.
What points to this is the narration of Isma`il, from Ayyub, from Muhammad, from Umm `Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), that she said, “We did not used to consider muddy or yellowish discharge as anything.” [Bukahri (326)]
This is according to the Malikis and Shafi`is, and one opinion of the Hanbalis, as mentioned by Ibn Taymiyyah. It is also the opinion of Ibn Hazm from amongst the Dhahiris.
Finally, our Shaykh Ibn `Uthaymin chose this opinion, and it is the closest to being correct.
And Allah knows best.
