Question

What is the ruling of a menstruating woman entering a mosque? دخول الحائض المسجد

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.

As to what follows:

In response to your question, we say, and with Allah Almighty lies all success:

There is no problem with a menstruating woman entering the mosque for a need. The evidence for this is when the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to `A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), “Get me the khumrah.” A khumrah is a piece of cloth roughly the size of a person’s face which is prostrated upon. She said, “I am menstruating.” He then said, “Your menstruation is not in your hand.” [Bukhari]

Thus, this shows that it is permissible for a menstruating woman to enter the mosque for a need, and she is not prevented from doing so.

As for the hadith narrated by Jusrah bint Dijajah, from `A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) reportedly said, “It is not permitted for a menstruating woman or one who is junub (sexually impure) to stay in the mosque.” It is agreed upon that it is weak. It is not authentic and cannot be used as evidence.

However, it is incumbent upon her to be cautious and protective in not allowing the mosque to be affected by her menstruating blood.
