Question

Are there any narrations about the signs of the night of Decree (laylatul qadr)? علامات ليلة القدر

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.   Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.   To proceed:   Many people imagine that on laylatul qadr the sky will become clear, and people will see dreams and scenes  which they do not see in the other ordinary nights.  However, nothing of this sort was established from the Prophet (peace be upon him), his companions, the Taabi’een and the pious predecessors. There is nothing established and authentic about the characteristics  of  laylatul qadr; that is concerning the signs on that night. There are statements which were transmitted from some of the pious predecessors that the trees prostrate, and during that night a light which is not seen in other nights is witnessed. These things may coincide with laylatul qadr but  they are not essential to it. Rather, the only sign that was authentically transmitted from the Prophet (peace be upon him) is what was mentioned by Imam Muslim in his Saheeh from the way of Ubay ibn Ka’b that “On the morning following Laylatul-Qadr  the sun rises bright without rays”. This is the most authentic narration that was transmitted about it. However the scholars differed on whether this sign continues in all the nights of Decree or it was a sign for that particular year.  This issue is not known by many people. In any case whether we say that the sign is continuous or it was for a particular year, there are no accompanying signs or preliminary signs for that night, and what was mentioned is a sign that is far, that is, it appears after the night has ended, and that is the sign appears on the night following laylatul qadr when the sun rises bright without rays. The wisdom from this is: that the people who strive in worship should strive, and that those who engage in acts of worship should do their utmost so that  they may gain the virtues of this night.   Whoever does not see this night, that is, he did not see light, a tree, and what was mentioned by some people concerning these issues, does this mean that he was not guided to worship on the night of Decree? The answer is no, the guidance to worship laylatul  qadr and get its reward is granted to everyone who stands up in prayer with sincerity and seeking Allah’s reward, such a person will get the virtues of the night whether he saw the mentioned signs or not.
