Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions. Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As to what follows: In response to your question, we say: The expiation for a person who has sexual intercourse with his wife during Ramadan is that he should manumit a slave. If he cannot do so he should fast consecutively for two months. However, during this consecutive fast it is not prohibited for him to have sexual relations with his wife after he breaks his fast. He can enjoy his wife sexually at night and not during the day. As for the expiation of Zihar, Allah’s says,” And he who does not find [a slave] - then a fast for two months consecutively before they touch one another” [al-Mujadilah 58: 4], and this means that no sexual intercourse or enjoyment should occur before the completion of the fasting for expiation. This is what applies to Zihar. As for the expiation of the person who has sexual intercourse with his wife during the day in Ramadan, nothing is incumbent upon him except fasting if he cannot free a slave and he may enjoy his wife at night in the manner that is permitted by Allah.
