Question

Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Is it permissible for pregnant woman to leave fasting in Ramadan?

هل يجوز للحامل أن تفطر في رمضان؟

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.   Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.   As to what follows:   In response to your question, we say:   Is it permissible for  pregnant woman to leave fasting in Ramadan?   If fasting is difficult for a pregnant  because it overstrains or if she fears harm for her child; then it is permissible for her to break her fast, and she will be included in the generality of Allah’s statement “And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]”  [al-Baqarah 2: 184]. She should then make up for the missed days after she gives birth. There is no difference in this between whether she fears for herself or her child who is in her stomach.  Some scholars say, “If she fears for her child then she should feed a poor person for each missed day.”  However, the correct opinion  is that she is not supposed to feed a poor person, rather, what is incumbent upon her is to fast only.
