What is the ruling on a husband and wife having intercourse in the bathroom?
جماع الزوجة في الحمام
Answer
All praise is due to Allah alone, and may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions. To answer your question, we say while seeking all the success from Allah: The ruling on having intercourse in the bathroom can be derived from the ruling on staying in the bathroom for more time than is needed. While Hanbali scholars believe it is forbidden for a person to stay in the place in which he relieves himself more than the time needed, the majority of scholars stated that it is disliked. It is prescribed for the Muslims when entering the bathroom to seek refuge with Allah from the male and female devils. It was narrated that Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said that whenever the Prophet (may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon him) would enter the place to relieve himself, he would say, “I seek refuge with You from evil and from the male and female devils” Reported by Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim The reason for taking refuge with Allah from evil and devils is because toilets, including bathrooms (that contains toilets), is a place where evil and its people live. Based on that, I believe a Muslim should not have intercourse with his wife in such a place due to the reasons mentioned above. Moreover, one cannot be sure that he and his wife will not be subjected to the harm of devils because devils harm people when they are weak due to joy, sadness and orgasm. In fact, Ibn Miflih stated in his book ‘al-Furoo’’ that Ibn Jamee’ al-Saydawi said, ‘having intercourse in the bathroom is disliked’ though the bathroom he mentioned, in fact, refers to the shower. And Allah knows best.
