Question

Is it prescribed to greet oneself when entering an empty house? هل يسلم الإنسان على نفسه إذا دخل بيتا ليس فيه أحد؟

Answer

All praise is due to Allah alone, and may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions. To answer your question, we say while seeking the success from Allah: It was reported that some of the righteous predecessors such as Ibn Umar, Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), Mujahid, ‘Ataa and al-Zuhri, stated that a person should say when entering an empty house: “Peace be upon us and the righteous slaves of Allah” based on the ayah (interpretation of the meaning): {But when you enter houses, give greetings of peace upon each other - a greeting from Allah , blessed and good} [Quran 24:61] However, some of the people of knowledge stated that the meaning of the ayah is that people should greet each other and so it cannot be used as evidence to state that it is prescribed to greet oneself when entering an empty house since there is no one to greet; as stated by Abu Bakr ibn al-‘Arabi. This view seems to be the most correct one. And Allah knows best. Khalid al-Mosleh   29/11/1428
