Question

Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. I usually give my Zakat at the beginning of Thul Hijjah yearly. When that time comes I calculate the Zakat that is due on my property and know the amount. However, I do not give the Zakat to the deserving people on the same day but I give them after one week, one month or sometimes after some months. Do I commit a sin by doing this?

تأخير توزيع الزكاة

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions. Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As to what follows: In response to your question, we say:   It is compulsory to hasten in giving Zakat when it becomes compulsory. It is not permitted to delay in giving it at its due time. However, it is permissible to have a slight delay in giving Zakat, like a week’s delay if there is a beneficial reason for doing so. Similarly, it is permissible to delay in giving Zakat in order to look for a deserving recipient. If the period of delay is long, you must separate the Zakat from the rest of the wealth, and record this for the preservation of the compulsory right of Zakat.
