Question

Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Question 1: Did Islam lay down specific conditions for carrying out the punishment of stoning adulterers to death, considering that a woman’s body has to be covered even at the time of stoning? Question 2: Did the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordain a specific size of stone whether large or small for stoning the adulterer and adulteress? Question 3: Did the Prophet (peace be upon him) set down the distance for stoning? Question 4: Is a man or woman stoned while standing or sitting? أسئلة حول صفة الرجم

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions. Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As to what follows: In response to your question, we say: Answer 1: Yes, stoning has conditions which the scholars discussed and explained in their books. Refer to what they stated in the books on Islamic punishments and the punishment for adultery. Answer 2: The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not ordain a specific size of  stones to be used in stoning adulterers. The scholars have mentioned that the stones should be medium-sized such that the people carrying out the punishment would be able to lift them without any difficulty. The stones should not be large so that they may not disfigure, and cause instant death.  The scholars added that the stones should not be too small because this will cause prolonged suffering. Answer 3: There was not distance which was specified by the Prophet (peace be upon him) for stoning. Answer 4:  As for how the stoning is to be carried out; this was transmitted in the story of the stoning of the woman from the Ghamid tribe which was transmitted in Muslim from the hadith of  Barirah and stated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) pronounced her punishment, and she was put in a ditch up to her chest and he commanded people and they stoned her. [Muslim (1695)]. Dr. Khalid al-Mosleh   25/09/1424 H
