Question

Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. I live in the sixteenth floor of a high-rise apartment building. I had brought a cat to my apartment. My daughter would let the cat enter the apartment everyday and we would feed it. Sometimes we would put it on the balcony overlooking the street and it would sit there. One day we put it there and left the house. We arrived late, and found that the cat had fallen to the ground. My question is that, is there a sin on me? What is the expiation if there is a sin on me? ما حكم قتل القطط بالخطأ

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions. Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As to what follows: In response to your question, we say: If that happened unintentionally and your intention in putting the cat on the balcony was not to prevent it from getting food and drink, then nothing is due from you. However, you should be careful and not repeat that because that Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “A woman entered Hell because of a cat which she tied up and did not feed, or let it loose to eat of the vermin of the earth, until it died” [Muslim (2619)]. And Allah knows best.
