Question

Allah Almighty said in His Glorious Book:

“All praise is due to Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, who made the angels messengers having wings, two or three or four. He increases in creation what He wills. Indeed, Allah is able to do all things.” [Fatir 35:1]

So are the angels bodies, or are they devoid of bodily characteristic?

Allah also said:

“Angels, harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allah in what He commands them, but do what they are commanded.” [Al-Tahrim 66:6]

Also what has been mentioned in the Tafsir of Surah al-Baqarah concerning the two angels, Harut and Marut, and how Allah Almighty placed in them the lustful desire of humans. So can it be deduced from all of this that the angels have hearts?

Answer

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

The apparent meaning of the words of the Qur’an and Sunnah indicate that the angels (peace be upon them) are living and speaking beings created from light, and that they have hearts and wings. The texts of the Book of Allah and Sunnah of His Messenger (peace be upon him) have come with all of that.

As for what is related to Harut and Marut, then most of what has been mentioned regarding them is from the reports of Bani Isra’il. Furthermore, if those reports were to be authentic, it should not be said, “How did Allah place in them lustful desire?” Because Allah is able to do all things,

“He is not questioned about what He does, but they will be questioned.” [Al-Anbiya’ 21:23]
