Question

Is it permissible to delay Isha prayer till after 12 midnight?

وقت صلاة العشاء

Answer

In the name if Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful.
The time for Isha prayer ends at midnight acoording to the hadith reported by Abdullah Ibn Umar who said that The Prophet (peace be on him) said:
“The time of the night prayer is up to the middle of the average night” [narrated by Musllim (612) and others]
Middle of the night differs according to whether the night is short or long, and whether we are in winter or in summer. To calculate the middle of the night you have to add the total number of hours from sunset up to sunrise then divide the hours by 2, what you get from that is the middle of the night.
For instance, if there are 10 hours between sunset and sunrise then the latest time for Isha will be 5 hours after sunset.
There for this clarifies a common mistake among many people who think that the middle of the night is 12 am. This is not correct.
And Allah knows best.

Your brother,
Dr. Khalid al-Muslih
