Question

Respected Shaykh, Assalamu Alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu. Is keeping the hair of the head long Sunnah?

حكم إطالة شعر الرأس وهل إطالته سنة عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم

Answer

All praise is due to Allah. May Allah's peace and blessings be upon our prophet Muhammad, his family and companions.

Wa alaykum salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu

To proceed:

To answer your question I say:

A number of scholars were of the view that keeping hair is Sunnah. This was the view of Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) and other scholars. Their proof was what was transmitted about the Prophet (peace be upon him) that his hair used to reach his earlobes. In some hadeeths it was stated that his hair used to reach his shoulders. A hadeeth in Bukhari (5563) and Muslim (2338) which was narrated by Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) stated that " The hair of the Prophet [SAW] came down to his shoulders."  Another narration stated, "The hair of the Prophet (peace be upon him) reached between his ears and shoulders." Another narration also mentioned, "The hair of the Messenger of Allah [SAW] came halfway down his ears.

Some scholars were of the view that the actions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) were customary. Therefore, the Prophet (peace be upon him) kept long hair because it was the custom of the Arabs to  do so. This is what is understood from the statement of ibn 'Abdul Barr in his book at-Tamheed (6/80). He said, "The people of our times do not shave their hair and only the soldiers do so. They have long hair and forelocks."

Our teacher Shaykh Muhammd al-'Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) said, "Keeping hair is not part of the Sunnah or worship. Rather, it is from customs and habits."
