Question

What it the ruling on working for an interest-based bank?

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.

To proceed:

It is prohibited to work for an interest based bank whether you are working directly with interest or in a section which indirectly supports interest. This is according to Allah’s saying: “But do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment.” [al-Maaidah: 2]. The other proof supporting this ruling is a hadith transmitted by Muslim (1598) on the authority of Hasheem from Abu Zubayr who heard Jaabir say: The Messenger of Allah (peace be on him) cursed the one who accepted usury, the one who paid it, the witness to it, and the one who recorded it. And he said: they are all equal”.
