Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It has been authentically reported in Sahih al-Bukhari, as well as in other books, that the Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned those who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of khamr (alcoholic drinks) and the use of ma`azif (musical instruments), as lawful. He mentioned them by way of dispraise and that Allah will punish them. So this hadith proves the impermissibility of ma`azif (musical instruments). Moreover, ma`azif are the instruments of lahw (amusement) according to the scholars of the Arabic language, and this is a name that addresses all of these instruments.
